Sao Paulo’s Minhocão: A Public Space on an Elevated Highway

A 2.2 mile stretch of elevated highway in Sao Paulo becomes a rare public space on each Sunday. The highway was constructed in 1970 in order to relieve traffic congestion. When it opened, it was the biggest project of reinforced concrete in all of Latin America. The locals call this highway “Minhocão”, which means an earthworm in Portuguese. They resent the way it tore through the urban fabric of Sao Paulo, and destroyed beautiful buildings in the center of the city.

Um trecho de 2,2 milhas da highway elevado em São Paulo torna-se um espaço público raro em cada domingo. A estrada foi construída em 1970, para aliviar o congestionamento do tráfego. Quando aberto, ele foi o maior projeto de concreto armado em toda a América Latina. Os habitantes locais chamam esta rodovia "Minhocão", que significa uma minhoca em português. Eles se ressentem da forma que rasgou através do tecido urbano de São Paulo e destruiu belos edifícios no centro da cidade.  "Uma bagunça arquitetônica (talvez) e um som poluente (absolutamente), o Minhocão cada domingo transforma em um espaço público no verdadeiro sentido de sua definição: um espaço social — acessível, gratuita e aberta a todos."  Minhocao filme:
